The Product: Pink silk lampshade handmade from vintage saree
A pink silk lampshade handmade from panels of vintage Indian saree fabric, sourced exclusively for us by silk route specialists Samarkand Design. Only small numbers of lampshades can be made from each individual garment and each shade pattern will differ very slightly depending on how the fabric is cut. The intricate patterns speak of the rich decorative heritage of India and the vibrant, jewel-bright combination of pink, teal, orange and red transports anyone lucky enough to have visited, straight back to the colourful textile markets of Rajasthan. The silk shade simply glows and that’s without even switching it on!
Sustainability and education are at the heart of Samarkand Design, which focuses on improving the lives of each of the artisans they work with, building lasting and positive relationships with suppliers based on the principles of fairness and social responsibility.
So styling ideas? Well we’d go for a juxtaposition of old and new here. This decorative lampshade would look fabulous on a simple stem lamp base sat on a sleek, modern console table in an entrance hall. Something like Ligne Roset‘s ‘Pont’ high table – which is essentially just a single, curved piece of glass. The subtle aqua hue of the edge of the glass, visible in a daylight setting, references the colours in the silk shade perfectly.

The lampshade has a 25cm base diameter at the lampshade’s widest point and is approx. 18cm in height.
