There can surely be no greater connection with the landscape than the presence and majesty of a fully-grown, red deer stag with his crown of antlers. An eye-catching conversation-starter in any medium. Yet what is so intriguing about this particular example is the way that the artist, Talia Giles, has drawn him entirely by digital means, whilst having created the impression he is sitting for a traditional portrait. A happy juxtaposition of ancient glory and modern rendering.
Talia starts with a series of photographs of each animal which she then combines and manipulates to create the perfect portrait pose, almost humanlike. Next, she digitally draws a complex net of triangles which form the base of the geometric image. Smaller, denser collections of triangles are used where more detail is required. Once the net is complete, each and every triangle is coloured individually to add depth, light, and shade. Finally, background colours are trialed to set the mood and allow the character to come alive. On close inspection, these digital artworks are breathtaking in their detail. They look equally striking in an industrial, urban loft setting as in a ‘modern-rustic’, rural abode.
Framing tips? Depending on your backdrop, you may want to choose a pale frame to in effect ‘disappear’. A modern, white frame against the mount and white/pale walls will, for example, allow the stag’s image to leap out from the wall. Alternatively, you may opt to outline the artwork with a strong line to create definition or a boundary between the stag and, say, a busy all-over wallpaper. If this is your preference, go for a slim, warm-hued wooden frame to enhance the artwork’s earthy palette.
Print Info & Sizing: The stag print is available in two sizes: A1, measuring 84.1cm x 59.4cm; and, A2, measuring 59.4cm x 42cm and comes rolled and ready for framing. All print measurements include a white border. Archival quality giclée prints on white, textured paper – Hahnemuhle Matt Photo Rag, 308g – will last up to 200 years without fading, kept in the right conditions.
Handling: Handle by the white border with clean hands. Don’t unwrap fully until ready to frame to avoid damaging the print. For best conservation of the print, acid-free mounts and backing should be used when framing to protect the paper from discolouration over time. We recommend using a framer who is Fine Art Trade Guild (FATG) certified.
