The Product: Pink and orange cushions in Kashmiri crewelwork
These pink and orange cushions feel smart yet eclectic. The cushions are made from a vibrantly-hued, hand-embroidered panel of Kashmiri crewelwork, sourced in India. The geometric ‘lozenge’ pattern is energetic and colourful.
It’s always a delight when we open a box of samples for our photoshoots. Often, designs were selected months previously. Chosen for looks and style? Yes. But also for quality, originality and a fascinating, authentic backstory. These crewel-work cushions from Samarkand Design do not disappoint. They are beautifully handmade. A decorative panel of neatly hand-embroidered, Indian, crewel-work adorns the front. The reverse is made using sturdy, co-ordinating cream cotton. This same cotton is also used for the piping.
We love the eclectic, ethnic-inspired feel of these cushions. Their tailored looks means they are equally at home in relaxed, ‘boho’ surroundings and smart, elegant drawing-rooms.
First, the textural nature of crewel-work contrasts well with plain velvet or linen-look upholstery. Furthermore, we’d confidently team these striking pink and orange cushions with stripes or florals. Above all, be sure to mix pattern scales. In our photography, one of these cushions dresses an armchair upholstered in a Bennison floral, a Casamance stripe and an Osborne & Little woollen pinstripe.
Never feel you must dress your sofa with supplementary scatter cushions to match upholstery. Often, these are optional add-ons when buying a new sofa. Always, create an original look. Even more, assemble your own ‘cast of cushions’. Buy from different fabric houses. Create the perfect look and comfort level.
